2004 purse-seine closures

Resolution C-04-09 (13 Kb) on the Conservation of Tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean in 2004-2006 establishes that:

1.   the fishery for tunas by purse-seine vessels in the EPO shall be closed from either (1) 1 August to 11 September; or (2) 20 November to 31 December.

2.   each IATTC Party, cooperating non-party, fishing entity or regional economic integration organization (“CPC”) shall prohibit fishing by all of its purse-seine vessels during one of the two periods.

3.   landings, transshipments and commercial transactions in tuna or tuna products originating from fishing activities that contravene this resolution are prohibited.

For 2004, the following closures are in effect:

1 August - 11 September

Bolivia
Ecuador
El Salvador
Honduras
Peru

20 November - 31 December

Guatemala
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Spain
United States
Vanuatu
Venezuela

Colombia has not chosen either of the two closure periods, but is implementing its own unilateral measures (3 Kb) ,considered by various Parties not to be consistent with the Resolution.

Weekly reports are sent to the governments, informing them of possible illegal fishing activity during the closure.

Resolution C-04-09 prohibits "landings, transshipments and commercial transactions in tuna or tuna products ... originating from fishing activities that contravene this resolution."  To assist in the implementation of this provision, the Commission staff is obtaining information on tuna caught in contravention of the Resolution.
