Biografía
Dr. Squires was born and raised in San Diego, California with close ties to the ocean. He joined the US National Marine Fisheries Service working in the fishing port of Gloucester Massachusetts, where he pioneered applying empirical quantitative analysis and applied microeconomic theory to marine fishing industries, initially focusing upon the New England fishing industry. Upon receiving his Ph.D., he transferred to the National Marine Fisheries Service Southwest Fisheries Science Center in his home city.
Squires combines government service with academic research and teaching, with one informing and influencing the other. He is the recipient of Department of Commerce’s highest honor, Gold Medal, for co-developing the economics of capacity and productivity growth for the FAO Plan of Action on Capacity. Focusing upon the large pelagic species of swordfish and tropical tunas and sea turtle bycatch, Squires became involved with the Western and Central Pacific Ocean fisheries and the IATTC, with particular focus upon addressing overcapacity. Upon retiring from the National Marine
Fisheries Service as Senior Scientist, Squires joined the IATTC. Squires was recently made Fellow of the International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade, the international fisheries economics association.
