Responsibilities

  • Maintaining effective communication between the Achotines Laboratory and the Administration of the IATTC's in San Diego, ensuring effective management of budget expenditures
  • Support and assist the coordination of research activities developed at Achotines Laboratory 
  • Develop plans and projects aimed at improving the laboratory and its facilities

Biography

Yole Buchalla joined the staff in 2021 as a research scientist with the Early Life History Group, Biology Program. She is originally from Brazil, where she earned her degree in Aquaculture Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Following her undergraduate studies, she relocated to Costa Rica, where she worked in the private sector, serving as Production Manager and playing a key role in the development and early operation of a marine fish hatchery focused on the commercial production of spotted rose snapper. In 2018, she was recruited into a master’s program at the University of Miami, where she specialized in the reproductive biology and early life history of marine finfish species, including cobia, mahi-mahi, Nassau grouper, red snapper, and Japanese flounder. Her master’s thesis focused on advancements in hatchery technology for the American red snapper, with emphasis on the first feeding of the larvae and juvenile rearing.
