Differences from similar species

Thunnus obesus has a longer pectoral fin. The mid-ventral region does not have a pattern of dots and lines. The body is less laterally compressed. The edges of the liver are striated. T. orientalis has a shorter pectoral fin that reaches half the distance between the first and second dorsal fin.
