Dr. Juan Valero’s current work at IATTC focuses on Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) for tropical tunas, other recent work included MSE and stock assessment for dorado as well as stock assessment work for tropical tunas. Juan was born in Argentina into a family of fishermen and seafarers, and as such has always being drawn to the sea. He moved to Seattle in 1999 to obtain M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Fisheries from the University of Washington. Juan currently works in fisheries research, stock assessment, fisheries management, education, communication and stakeholder dialogue. He has been involved in international research programs, stock assessment and management of industrial and small scale/artisanal fisheries. He is interested in the human dimensions of fisheries, organizing and conducting stakeholder dialogue/communication and training in management strategies. He has worked as an independent fisheries consultant for government, NGO and industry, as well as a scientific staff and independent contractor for state, national and international agencies including the IATTC, CAPAM, International Pacific Halibut Commission, New Zealand Seafood Industry Council, School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (University of Washington, Seattle), Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero, Dirección de Fiscalización Pesquera, and the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina).
